Inside Cosmydor: The Powerful Beauty Brand Taking On Conventional Skincare

By Becci Vallis | May 17, 2021

Impeccably chic, unisex and luxe: artisanal brand Cosmydor is leading the charge in responsible beauty, boasting some serious sustainability credentials (did someone say 100% biodegradable and plastic-free?) and gorgeous products we just can’t get enough of. We caught up with the man behind the Cosmydor’s 2015 resurrection, Xavier Quattrocchi-Oubradous, to find out more about the luxury heritage brand…

Describe Cosmydor in three words…

French savoir-faire, artisanal, sustainable.

Who’s behind the brand?

Many people, really, given Cosmydor first launched in 1877! But more recently myself, as the (re)founder and a team of passionate people who love to manufacture highly efficacious and completely natural skincare by hand. They are based in Vierzon, in the heart of France

For people who have never tried your products, what are they missing out on?

Traditionally, cosmetics are made using petrochemicals… chemical derivatives of the fossil fuel industry. We believe we can match the luxe textures and fragrances found in conventional cosmetics using only natural and organic ingredients. Doing it this way is so, so much healthier for the body and for the planet… and it means our products are powerful and highly effective, too: we use 10- to 25 times more active ingredients than conventional skincare.

All this and without any plastic containers.

Tell us about your hero product and why you can’t live without it

I love the E/2 Essential Care Tonka: a deeply moisturising everyday cream. It smells like pure tonka (for those who prefer vanilla we recommend E/1 Vanilla instead), with a light texture which penetrates quickly. It’s also a multi-purpose product that can be used for the hands or face, and it’s easy to carry all day long in the compact packaging with tubes are colourful and fun.

Like all our products, the Essential Care range is organic-certified and manufactured and packaged in France with 99.5% natural ingredients and 50.6% active ingredients (conventional skincare is typically just 3- to 5%).

How are you making waves in the world of sustainability?

Modestly, as we are still so small! Luckily, we are supported by a profound and global wave of consciousness from consumers, which has finally been picked up by incredible retailers, who are themselves becoming more knowledgeable and deciding to create spaces that support truly sustainable brands.

We’re treating our bestie to some self-care essentials. What would you suggest we send them from your stash and why?

Get them set up for a nourishing evening skincare routine with the Botanical Regenerating Face Cleanser with Ylang-Ylang, C/4 Hydrating Facial Scrub with Pink Clay & Almond Powder and C/3 Nourishing Mask with Shea Butter & Orange Floral Water. Easy.

What can we expect to see next from you?

We are launching a range of six body milks with the same luxe ingredients as our six Essential Care Creams: vanilla, tonka, lemon, lavender, rosemary and orange.. so anyone can find their preferred (natural) fragrance!

Editor’s pick: Cosmydor Essential Care Lemon Face and Hands Purifying Cream, $47

The most delicious hand hydrator with an addictive, natural lemony scent, it raises those endorphins just by applying it.
